Fjardalax, Arctic Sea Farm could lose the licenses they were granted last December, 'over a technicality.'
Icelandic salmon farmers Fjardalax and Arctic Sea Farm will find out Friday whether they will have some of their licenses revoked.
Combined the two licenses – which were initially granted in December 2017 -- amount to 17,500 metric tons of salmon. One of the licenses was for 10,700 metric tons and the other for 6,800 metric tons.
An appeal to the Environmental and Natural Resources Complaints Committee over the initial granting of the licenses in December was upheld and a decision on whether the licenses will be revoked will be finalized in a couple of hours, Kristján Davíðsson, manager of the Icelandic Aquaculture Association (IAA) told IntraFish.
The conclusion of the committee is based on the argument that the companies’ environmental assessment reports and the opinion of the planning agency alone are not considered a legitimate basis for granting permits.
“But they have not lost the licensees yet as it is not finalized and even if it is, then there will be a court case as the companies will not accept losing licenses over a technicality,” he said.
