Thai Union subsidiary's land-based salmon dreams are dead

The project, announced by the French group, was mothballed after the Thai giant's acquisition, and there are no plans to revive it.

MerAlliance was planning an onshore salmon farm in Brittany in a bid to have its own supply of “high quality” raw material.

Plans were put on hold after Thai Union's acquisition of Meralliance in September 2015 and then all went quiet.

But now the company has broken its silence on the matter with a spokesperson telling IntraFish the project has been abandoned.

It is unclear at this point whether Thai Union will try similar ventures, but last year its Europeenne de la Mer, subsidiary announced the closure of the UK-based salmon smoker, The Edinburgh Salmon Company Ltd (ESCo).

After no feasible alternative solution to closure, production ceased at the end of 2018.
