The organization is one of a few in the international seafood industry reaping the benefits of a diverse leadership team.

The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) is sponsoring the IntraFish Women in Seafood Leadership Summit for the third year in a row and will be represented on stage by an exciting and eloquent speaker.

"ASMI is proud to support the Intrafish Women in Seafood Leadership Summit," said outgoing Executive Director Alexa Tonkovich.

"The sponsorship aligns with the Alaska seafood industry’s initiative to provide opportunity and growth in the diversity of our leadership. We support the work Intrafish is doing to encourage women to explore leadership roles in our industry worldwide."

Representing ASMI on stage at the event in San Diego will be Technical Director Michael Kohan.

Born and raised in Juneau, Alaska, Kohan has an exciting and varied background in the seafood supply chain.

She received her bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Washington in Seattle, before heading off to Cambodia as a Peace Corp volunteer and then back to Alaska to earn her master’s degree in fisheries studying environmental variability and salmon energetics.

In between, she spent summers working as a researcher on NOAA research vessels and a deckhand on commercial trollers in Alaska capitalizing on valuable learning opportunities in the science-based management of Alaska’s fisheries and Alaska seafood quality practices.

She was hired as the ASMI Seafood Technical Director in 2015, advising and providing resources for ASMI’s international and domestic programs as well as Alaska seafood industry members in all aspects of seafood quality, safety, nutrition and utilization.

She will join a lineup of speakers addressing the crucial issue of diversity and the bottom line, exploring how female leadership brings both cultural and financial benefits to business.
