EU unveils proposed quotas for Atlantic, North Sea in 2019

Commission proposes TAC increase for several stocks.

The European Commission recommended total allowable catch levels for 89 stocks in the Atlantic and North Sea in advance of an upcoming fisheries council meeting in December, where member states will officially set next year's fishing quotas.

The commission proposed cuts for 22 stocks, increases or flat total allowable catch (TAC) levels for 62 stocks and new bycatch quotas for five stocks.

The landing obligation will be fully implemented beginning Jan. 1 across EU fishing fleets, meaning all catches by commercial fleets are to be landed and counted against each member’s quota.

Wednesday's proposals will be submitted for discussion and a final decision by the member states on Dec. 17 and 18.
