MSC award boosts Irish seafood sector

The entire Irish mussel fishery is now Marine Stewardship Council certified.

The Irish rope-grown mussel fishery was awarded Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification on Friday.

Others - 9%

This latest certification means the entire Irish mussel fishery under the management of Ireland’s seafood development agency (BIM) is now certified.

The Irish rope-grown mussel fishery spans the length of Ireland's coast with the majority of farms between Donegal to Cork along Ireland's Atlantic coast.

Given the French appetite for 'moules frites' (mussels with french fries), France is the biggest market for Irish mussels along with its neighbor the Netherlands.

Exports of Irish seafood to Asia climbed 23 percent in 2018 to €96 million ($108.5 million) meaning Asia has overtaken the United Kingdom as Ireland’s second biggest seafood export market.
