UK fish trader to close chilled division following contract loss

The company lost a major supply contract with a client.

UK, Hull-based fish trader F Smales & Son announced the potential closure of its chilled seafood division citing the loss of business with a major account.

In addition to the division closure, the firm could also shut down its Witty Street factory.

“A long-established Hull fish merchant and fish processor, F Smales & Son (Fish Merchants) Ltd have to regrettably announce the potential closure of the Chilled Seafood Division and their factory on Witty Street,” the company said.

“The potential closure is due to the loss of business with a major account and vertical integration within the industry.”

The closure of the division would lead to the loss of 95 jobs, the company said.

The company's trading division, which is independent from the chilled division, has an annual turnover of £70 million (€75.8 million/$84.9 million), and a large customer base for frozen fish and other products sold to fish and chips shops, and wholesalers.

"The company is in a strong and secure financial position moving forward," it said.
