Scottish salmon exports surge in Japanese market

The news comes before the Japan Seafood Expo 2019.

Sales of Scottish seafood to Japan increased four fold in 2018 thanks to its growing role in the country's sushi market, Herald Scotland reported.

Volume sales increased from 598 metric tons in 2017 to more than 2,630 metric tons in 2018, of which about 29 percent was fresh salmon worth £5.5 million (€6.0 million/$6.6 million).

"Asia, in particular Japan, is one of the largest consumers of seafood in the world and their desire for Scottish seafood is on the increase, mirroring their appetite for high quality, sustainable and traceable products," Head of Trade Marketing Asia, Europe and Middle East at Seafood Scotland said.

Japan is considered the second largest country in the terms of seafood consumption right after China.

The news comes ahead of Japan Seafood Expo 2019, where a representative group of Scottish stakeholders will attend.
